The air in the makeshift council chamber, a cavern carved deep into the bones of the mountain, hummed with a nervous energy that Kaelen found himself struggling to contain. Outside, the wind howled, a mournful dirge that seemed to echo the anxieties swirling within. He sat at the head of a rough-hewn table, Lyra beside him, her presence a steady anchor in the rising tide of unrest. Around them, the faces of their burgeoning alliance were etched with a mixture of weariness and apprehension. They had weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical, to reach this point, but the calm before the final, inevitable confrontation felt fraught with its own unique peril.

"He cannot lead us," grumbled a burly man named Borin, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the stone. Borin was a seasoned warrior, his loyalty to the old ways unquestioned, but his faith in Kaelen, the boy who had stumbled into their lives like a fallen star, was wavering. "He is untested. A child playing at war."

A ripple of murmurs spread through the assembly. Kaelen felt a prickle of heat rise in his cheeks, but he forced himself to remain still, to meet Borin's gaze with a steady resolve he wasn't entirely sure he possessed. This was it, the test he had known would come. Lyra’s hand, cool and firm, rested on his arm, a silent reassurance.
