The wind, once a gentle whisper through the skeletal remains of Eldoria, now howled with a mournful, chilling keen. It carried not the scent of dust and memory, but a cloying sweetness, the sickly perfume of decay. Kaelen, his hand instinctively going to the hilt of the sword Lyra had gifted him, surveyed the landscape with a growing unease. The vibrant emerald of the plains had leached away, replaced by a bruised, sickly green that hinted at rot beneath the surface. Trees, once proud sentinels, now twisted like arthritic fingers, their leaves curled and blackened.

Lyra stood beside him, her usual serene composure strained. Her eyes, deep pools of ancient wisdom, scanned the desolate scene, a flicker of pain crossing her features. She touched the locket at her throat, a small, almost imperceptible gesture, but Kaelen had learned to read the subtle language of her worry.

“It grows stronger,” she murmured, her voice barely audible above the unnatural wind. “Malakor’s tendrils reach further than we anticipated.”
