Chapter 10
Guardians of the Flame
Kaelen and Lyra gather unlikely allies—outcasts and rebels who also suffered under the encroaching darkness. They form a fragile alliance, united by a common enemy and a flicker of hope.
The wind, a mournful dirge, swept through the skeletal remains of what was once a bustling marketplace. Kaelen, his cloak pulled tight against the chill, followed Lyra through the labyrinthine alleys, each crumbling stone a testament to a forgotten glory. They were searching for those who, like them, had been pushed to the fringes, their lives irrevocably altered by the encroaching shadow of Malakor and the insidious machinations of Lord Valerius. It was a desperate gambit, a gathering of the broken, the ostracized, those who had nothing left to lose but their own simmering resentment.
Lyra, her face etched with a weariness that belied her steady stride, paused before a doorway shrouded in shadows. A faint, acrid scent of cheap ale and desperation hung in the air. "This is where we begin," she murmured, her voice a low hum against the wind's lament. "The 'Crimson Vipers.' They were once renowned merchants, their caravans stretching across the plains. Now… they are shadows, their wealth plundered, their families scattered."
Kaelen’s heart ached for the stories whispered in the wind, the tales of prosperity turned to dust. He had lived a life of quiet obscurity, his days filled with mundane tasks, his nights haunted by dreams of fire and a burning crown. Now, thrust into a world of ancient magic and treacherous politics, he felt a kinship with these broken souls. They, too, were remnants of a fractured past, yearning for a semblance of order.
