Chapter 13
The Great Card Recovery
Squeaky, realizing she'd caused a bit of a panic, looks sheepish. With a series of chitters and flicks of her tail, she begins to nudge the Valentine's cards out of her nest. Russo, Baby Bear, and even Captain Zoomie help to catch them as they tumble down. Some are a little crumpled, and a few have tiny teeth marks, but most are in good condition. They gather the recovered cards carefully, a wave of relief washing over them. They thank Squeaky, who offers them a shiny button as an apology, which Captain Zoomie immediately tries to add to his own secret collection.
Squeaky, perched precariously on the edge of her nest, wriggled her nose. A tiny, almost imperceptible shiver ran through her. With a series of soft chitters, punctuated by the nervous flick of her bushy tail, Squeaky began to nudge. A pink card, emblazoned with a Cupid shooting an arrow, slid out and tumbled towards the ground. Russo, ever the watchful leader, let out a triumphant yelp. "There! Look!"
Baby Bear, his paws already outstretched, moved with surprising agility. He caught the card just before it hit the mossy earth, a wide smile spreading across his snout. "Got it!"
