The silence of the forest pressed in on Tina and Eva, thick and suffocating. The cheerful crackle of the campfire, which had been their only comfort just moments before, was now a distant memory, swallowed by the encroaching darkness and the chilling absence of Kitty’s giggles. A knot of pure, unadulterated terror tightened in Tina’s stomach. Kitty, their bright, bubbly Kitty, gone. Just like that. Tina swallowed, her throat dry. Her own fear, a cold, slithering thing that usually kept her rigidly in control, was now battling with a fierce, protective instinct. Kitty was her best friend. Her responsibility. The secret fear of getting lost, of being alone in the dark, clawed at her, but the image of Kitty’s trusting smile was a stronger force. “We have to find her,” Tina said, her voice steadier than she felt. “We can’t just stay here.”
