Chapter 8
The Silent Forest
Elara and Flicker enter a forest where the trees seem to weep, their leaves grey and brittle. The absence of birdsong and animal calls is profound. Elara's empathy is tested as she witnesses the land's sorrow.
The edge of Lumina gave way to a silence so thick it felt like a blanket woven from dust and forgotten dreams. Elara, with Flicker a small, vibrant spark of concern at her heel, stepped into the Silent Forest. The trees stood like skeletal sentinels, their bark a dull, lifeless grey, their branches reaching out like gnarled fingers. Where leaves should have been, brittle, faded husks clung precariously, rustling with a dry, mournful whisper that was the only sound to break the oppressive stillness.

She could *feel* it, a dull ache spreading through her chest, the echo of a sorrow so deep it felt ancient.
“It’s so… quiet, Flicker,” she murmured, her voice barely a breath against the heavy air. Flicker, usually a flurry of inquisitive movements, stayed close, his little body pressed against her leg, his wide, luminous eyes scanning the desolate landscape. He let out a soft, questioning chirp, a sound that seemed to snag on the silence and disappear.
