Leaving the Fading Village
With Flicker by her side and Maeve's blessing, Elara leaves Lumina. The journey is daunting, the world outside Lumina already touched by the grey fog, making it a desolate and emotionally barren landscape.
The air in Lumina had grown thin, not with altitude, but with the absence of feeling. Elara, clutching Flicker close to her chest, felt it like a dull ache behind her eyes. Elder Maeve’s weathered hand, surprisingly warm, rested on Elara’s shoulder. “The threads will guide you, child,” she whispered, her voice a dry rustle of leaves. “Remember what I told you. Listen to your heart, and it will show you the way.”
Elara nodded, her gaze sweeping over the few faces that had gathered to see her off. They were pale, their eyes vacant, like polished stones. Once, these faces had been alive with laughter, worry, and love. Now, they were merely present, a hushed audience to a departure they no longer truly felt. The grey fog, a silent thief, had stolen their bright hues, leaving only the muted tones of indifference. It was a chilling sight, and it spurred Elara onward.
Flicker, a tiny creature of spun moonlight and residual joy, chirped softly against her ear, a warm vibration against her cheek. It had appeared a few days ago, a vibrant spark in the encroaching gloom, drawn to Elara’s own brimming well of emotion. Now, it was her only companion, a tiny beacon of reassurance.
