The Grey Being, once a fearsome silhouette against the encroaching mist, now seemed… smaller. Less a monster, more a mountain of sorrow. Its vast, silent gaze, which had once felt like the absence of all feeling, now held a profound, unsettling sadness that Elara’s own heart understood with an ache.

“You… you can see me?” The voice, when it finally came, was a rustle of dry leaves, a whisper of wind through ancient, hollow trees. It was a sound so laden with surprise, with a desperate, fragile hope, that it made Elara’s breath catch in her throat.

Elara nodded, her throat tight. She couldn’t speak, not yet. The sheer weight of the Being’s loneliness pressed in on her, a palpable force that made the cavern feel both vast and suffocatingly small. Flicker, perched on her shoulder, gave a soft, chirping sound, a tiny vibration of concern that Elara felt deep within her own chest.
