Chapter 7
Anya's Ascent
The air in Anya’s small cottage grew heavy with a silence that pressed in, a stark contrast to the usual hum of the village. Outside, the familiar scent of pine and damp earth was tinged with something acrid, something that clawed at the back of her throat. The blight, like a creeping shadow, had tightened its grip, and with it, a palpable despair had settled over their valley. Anya traced the rough, unfinished threads of a tapestry depicting the sun, a symbol of life and warmth that felt like a cruel mockery now. Her fingers, usually nimble and sure, fumbled, the wool snagging as if resisting her touch. Doubt, a cold serpent, coiled in her gut, mirroring the dread that had begun to fester in the villagers’ eyes.
Her grandmother’s prayer book lay open on the worn wooden table, its pages brittle and yellowed with age. Anya had spent hours poring over its cryptic verses, searching for answers, for a sign, for anything that might illuminate the path forward. The words, once a comforting balm, now seemed to shimmer with an ancient, inscrutable wisdom that both beckoned and terrified her. She reread the passage about the ‘threads of resilience,’ a phrase that had resonated deeply within her, yet felt so distant now. Resilience. How could she find it when the very earth beneath her feet seemed to be failing?
A shadow fell across the open page. Anya looked up, her heart giving a small, involuntary leap. Marius stood in the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the frame, his face etched with a familiar blend of concern and impatience. His gaze swept over the cottage, lingering on the unfinished tapestry, then on the prayer book.
