The forest floor, usually a tapestry of emerald moss and fallen leaves, was now a sickly, bruised brown. Anya pushed aside a branch, its bark slick with a viscous, dark ooze that clung to her fingers like a second skin. The air itself felt heavy, thick with the cloying scent of decay, a stark contrast to the crisp, pine-scented breath of the Carpathians she knew. This was no ordinary decay. This was the Whispering Blight’s touch, a creeping sickness that had begun in the outer fields and now, insidiously, was beginning to weave its way into the very heart of the ancient woods.

She clutched her grandmother’s prayer book tighter, its worn leather cover a comforting weight against her chest. The pages, brittle with age, whispered secrets of remedies and rituals, but the blight was unlike anything described within its familiar script. It was a new darkness, a serpent coiling around the soul of their village, and Anya, with her threads of prayer, felt utterly outmatched.

A rustle in the undergrowth made her freeze. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Was it an animal, driven mad by hunger or the blight’s toxic influence? Or was it something else, something drawn to the despair that now seemed to permeate the very soil? She strained her ears, listening. Only the mournful sigh of the wind through the skeletal branches answered.
