Chapter 5
Threads of Doubt
The air in Anya’s small cottage hung heavy, thick with the scent of dried herbs and the unspoken weight of a village’s despair. Outside, the usually vibrant green of the fields had leached away, replaced by a sickly, ochre hue. The blight, a creeping sickness that had first appeared as a whisper on the wind, now choked the life from their crops, leaving behind brittle stalks and a gnawing emptiness in every heart. Anya traced the rough weave of the tapestry spread across her lap, her fingers remembering the silken threads of past prayers. Now, the wool felt coarse, unyielding, as if the very fibers absorbed her own growing unease.
She’d spent the last few days pouring over her grandmother Elena’s prayer book, its pages brittle with age and filled with her elegant, spidery script. The cryptic verses Elena had left behind, once a source of comfort and guidance, now seemed to mock her with their ambiguity. “When the spirit falters, seek the root where shadows gather,” one passage read. Another warned, “The deepest darkness breeds where light has fled, but even there, a thread of hope is spun.” But hope felt like a fragile butterfly, its wings battered by the relentless gale of the blight.
Anya closed her eyes, trying to conjure the familiar warmth of her grandmother’s presence, the gentle hum of her voice as she’d taught Anya to imbue each knot with intention, each color with meaning. Instead, a flicker of unease, a serpent’s hiss, coiled in the back of her mind. What if the prayers weren’t enough? What if her gift, the very thing that set her apart, was merely a trick of the light, a well-meaning delusion? The whispers of doubt, insidious and cold, began to weave themselves into the fabric of her own being.
