Chapter 10
The Tapestry of Hope
The air in Anya’s small cottage tasted of dust and dried herbs, a familiar comfort that usually soothed her restless spirit. But tonight, the scent was acrid, tinged with the metallic tang of fear that had settled over the village like a shroud. Outside, the wind howled a mournful dirge through the skeletal branches of the ancient oaks, a sound that mirrored the gnawing unease in her own heart. She sat before her loom, the unfinished tapestry depicting the village festival a stark contrast to the grim reality outside. The vibrant threads, meant to capture the joy of harvest, now seemed to mock her with their cheerful hues.
Her fingers, usually so nimble, fumbled with the shuttle. Each pass of the weft felt heavy, weighted with the collective despair of her people. The blight, a creeping, insatiable hunger, was devouring their fields, their livestock, their very hope. Whispers, once filled with laughter and songs, now carried only fear and suspicion. Some pointed fingers at Anya, at the strange magic she wove into her creations, blaming her for attracting the darkness. Others, the elders mostly, clung to their fading faith, praying for a miracle that seemed increasingly distant.
Anya closed her eyes, trying to summon the quiet strength that had always resided within her, the strength her grandmother Elena had nurtured. She remembered Elena’s hands, gnarled and wise, guiding her own small fingers as they first learned to knot threads, to coax patterns from raw wool. “Every thread, Anya,” Elena had rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across stone, “is a prayer. A whisper to the divine. Weave your heart into them, and they will carry your burdens.”
