The year 2020 felt like a turning point, a seismic shift in the quiet hum of their lives in Lebanon. The air, usually thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the distant call to prayer, seemed to crackle with a new energy. It was a Tuesday, the kind where the sun beat down with an insistent warmth, even though spring was still a whisper. Hatem, who was nine then, was perched on the worn rug in their small living room, meticulously arranging small, smooth stones he’d collected from the street. His mother, her hands perpetually busy, was mending a tear in his father’s shirt, her brow furrowed in concentration. His father, his shoulders hunched with the familiar weariness of constant work, sat at the small, cluttered table, poring over a handful of bills.
Then the phone rang. It was an old, clunky thing, its plastic casing yellowed with age. It sat on a small shelf by the door, a silent sentinel of potential connections and news, both good and bad. His mother, her heart always a little quicker when the phone rang, wiped her hands on her apron and reached for it.
