Chapter 11
A New School, A New Routine
In March 2024, Hatem begins Grade 7 at Clayton Park Junior High. The short two-minute walk to school is a welcome comfort, but the school's strict atmosphere is immediately apparent.
The crisp March air in Dartmouth carried a promise of change, a gentle thawing after winter's long embrace. For Hatem, it also carried the scent of a new beginning, the unmistakable aroma of a school building. Clayton Park Junior High. The name itself sounded solid, grounded, a stark contrast to the nomadic uncertainty that had defined so much of his young life. He was fifteen now, a year that felt both a milestone and just another marker on a path still being forged. The walk to school was a revelation, a mere two minutes from their modest apartment. Two minutes. It was a distance so blessedly short, so easily traversed, that it felt like a gift. He remembered the long, arduous journeys, the bus rides that blurred into days, the fear of being too far from safety, from familiarity. This short stroll, however, was a different kind of experience. The school itself, a sturdy brick building, stood as a silent sentinel in the neighborhood. It was clean, orderly, and from the outside, it seemed to hum with a quiet energy.
Inside, however, the hum quickly became a more defined, and at times, stern, melody. The hallways were wide, polished to a mirror sheen, and the echoes of footsteps seemed to be met with an almost immediate hush. Teachers moved with a purposeful stride, their gazes sharp, their voices often carrying an undertone of authority that Hatem found both intriguing and a little intimidating. He was in Grade 7, a leap from what he had experienced before, where learning had often been piecemeal, dictated by circumstance rather than curriculum. Here, there was structure, a rhythm to the day that was both comforting and demanding.
His first few days were a blur of new faces, unfamiliar classrooms, and the constant effort to understand the rapid-fire English that swirled around him. He found himself observing, a quiet observer in a sea of boisterous teenagers. His classmates, for the most part, seemed to navigate this world with an ease he envied. They laughed easily, their conversations flowing like a well-rehearsed play, while Hatem often felt like he was still learning the script. He missed the easy camaraderie he had shared with his siblings, the familiar comfort of their presence. But here, he was on his own, a student among many, expected to keep pace.
