Chapter 10
Landing on Canadian Soil
July 17th, 2023, marks a significant milestone as Hatem and his family arrive in Canada. The journey has ended, and a new chapter of their lives is about to begin.
July 17th, 2023. The air in the airplane cabin hummed with a peculiar mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. Outside, the world was a blur of clouds, but inside, a new world was slowly, steadily, coming into focus. Hatem, at twelve years old, felt the rumble of the engines deep in his chest, a sound that was both familiar from the long flight and strangely new. It was the sound of movement, of change, of a journey that had begun long before this metal bird took to the sky and that would continue long after its wheels touched the ground.
He looked around, his eyes scanning the faces of his family. His mother, her brow furrowed with a familiar worry, yet her lips curved in a soft, hopeful smile as she glanced at him. His father, his strong hands clasped in his lap, his gaze fixed somewhere beyond the window, perhaps envisioning the life they were about to build. His older brother, already a young man at fifteen, leaned forward, his eyes wide with the wonder of it all. And then there were the younger ones, his second brother, then just six, and his sister, barely four, their small bodies snuggled against their parents, blissfully unaware of the magnitude of the moment, their dreams filled with the simple comforts of sleep and perhaps a familiar toy. Six tickets. Six suitcases. Six lives poised on the precipice of something unknown, something vast.
The journey had been a tapestry woven with threads of hope and hardship. The call in 2020, a lifeline tossed across continents, had ignited a spark in the weary hearts of his parents. Canada. A land of promise, a chance for a fresh start, a haven from the uncertainties that had shadowed their lives for so long. The months that followed had been a whirlwind of applications, interviews, and the meticulous packing of their worldly possessions into six suitcases, each one a repository of memories and necessities. The support group, a beacon of kindness, had been instrumental, their generosity in purchasing the plane tickets a gift that transcended monetary value. It was a gift of opportunity, of freedom, of a future.
