Eleanor lingers after the meeting, observing the aftermath of Alex's disclosure. She watches Alex and Evelyn share a quiet moment, then intercepts Alex with a warning about Chen's hidden agenda, leaving Alex unsettled.
Eleanor stood in the hallway, her heels silent on the carpet, watching the conference room door swing shut behind Chen's legal team. She hadn't left with them. She'd stepped aside, pressed herself against the wall like she belonged there, and waited.
The room inside was still. She could hear Mack's low whistle through the door, Sophia's bright laugh, the scrape of a chair. She imagined Alex's face—that look he got when something went right, like he couldn't quite believe it.
She'd seen that look before. Twenty years ago, when he'd pulled himself out of that Missouri town and swore he'd never look back.
