Evelyn returns to her office after breakfast, the lawsuit news settling in. She calls Daniel Cross, then meets with Alex on the rooftop. Sophia arrives early, and Michael Chen's presence at the office forces a confrontation that shifts the day's trajectory.
The call with Daniel Cross lasted eleven minutes. Evelyn timed it. Eleven minutes of measured words, legal jargon, and the kind of calm that only came from people who billed by the hour.
"File the preemptive response," Cross had said. "I'll have someone in Boston ready by tomorrow morning. Keep your heads down. Build your product."
Easy for him to say. He wasn't the one with a target on his back.
