Chapter 10
A Symphony of Petals
The air in Elara’s cottage hung heavy, not with the usual perfume of roses, but with a cloying, damp scent like forgotten rain. Each petal that fell from the wilting bushes seemed to carry a sigh, a whisper of what was lost. Her fingers, once nimble and sure as they coaxed vibrant hues from nature’s palette, now trembled, fumbling with the delicate fragments. The crimson of a dying rose felt like a bruise against her skin, the pale yellow of a fading bloom a chilling echo of her own dwindling hope. The Shadow Creature, a formless dread that had slithered from the edges of her dreams and into the waking world, seemed to feed on this decay, its presence a cold draft that snaked through the once sun-drenched rooms.
Elder Willow’s words, spoken with the rustle of ancient leaves, still echoed in her mind: “The heart of the garden, child, is tethered to the heart of your lineage. Where one falters, so too does the other.” Elara had finally understood. The blight wasn't just attacking her flowers; it was attacking the very magic that flowed through her, the magic that was, in turn, a part of her family’s long, tangled history. The Forgotten Ancestor’s sorrow, a wound left unhealed for generations, had finally found its way to her, manifesting as this creeping darkness.
She looked at the half-finished tapestry on her loom. Once, it had pulsed with the vibrant reds of a summer sunset, the deep purples of twilight, the cheerful yellows of a field of sunflowers. Now, the threads felt dull, lifeless, like dried grass. The petals she’d woven in, once glowing with captured light, were brittle and faded. It was a mirror of her own spirit, a once-bright flame flickering in a gathering gloom.
