The air in the Vatican Catacombs hung thick and ancient, a palpable weight of history and dust that Michael and Melissa usually found utterly intoxicating. Tonight, however, it felt less like a treasure trove and more like a particularly musty, oversized tomb. Michael, flashlight beam dancing erratically across damp, moss-covered stone, muttered under his breath.
“Seriously, Mel, is this the best they’ve got? I was expecting more… *bling*. Egyptian pharaohs had more sparkle than this.”
Melissa, trailing a few paces behind, adjusted the strap of her satchel, her own flashlight illuminating a particularly unsettling pile of what appeared to be very old bones. “Michael, darling, if you’re looking for a disco ball, you’re in the wrong millennium. This is about *value*, not gaudy baubles. And besides,” she nudged a loose stone with the toe of her boot, “you’re the one who insisted on bringing that ridiculous, oversized grappling hook. We’re in a *tomb*, not scaling the Eiffel Tower.”
