Elias Thorne felt the familiar ache in his chest, a dull thrumming that had become the soundtrack to his existence. Another Tuesday, another spreadsheet, another meticulously crafted email that would likely disappear into the digital ether, unread or unheeded. The promotion he’d chased with a feverish intensity had arrived six months prior, a gilded cage of increased responsibility and stagnant satisfaction. He’d celebrated, of course, with a forced smile and a toast to his own perceived triumph. Yet, the echo of his old life, the one where he’d longed for *this*, persisted, mocking his attainment. He’d thought the new title, the thicker wallet, the envy in Sarah’s eyes would be the key, the incantation that unlocked the gilded doors of his discontent. They were not.
He’d tried to explain it to Sarah, his voice a low murmur over lukewarm coffee at their usual haunt. “It’s like I’m stuck, Sarah. Like the same day repeats, just with different numbers.”
She’d stirred her latte with a decisive clink. “Elias, darling, you’re being melodramatic. You have a great job, a beautiful apartment, and you’re not exactly starving. What more do you want? A private jet?” Her laughter was bright, brittle. “You need to focus on what’s real, what you can touch. Promotions, investments, maybe a nice, stable relationship. Those are the things that change a story.”
