The dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the stained-glass windows, each a miniature galaxy in the vast, silent expanse of the ancestral library. Centuries had rendered the air thick with the scent of decaying vellum and the phantom perfume of long-vanished roses, a scent that clung to me like a shroud. Seraphina, ever the beacon in my perpetual twilight, traced the spine of a tome bound in what felt disturbingly like human skin. Her touch, even in this desolate place, was a caress that sent tremors through my ancient heart.

"They called this room the 'Chamber of Lost Truths'," she murmured, her voice a silken thread weaving through the silence. "Perhaps it holds the answers we seek, Valerius."

Answers. The word tasted like ash on my tongue. I had sought answers for millennia, and found only more questions, more shadows. My gaze drifted to a portrait that hung in a shadowed alcove, a woman with eyes that mirrored Seraphina's fire, yet held a flicker of a sorrow I understood all too well. Elara. My first consort. The memory was a wound that time had failed to heal, a constant, gnawing ache beneath the veneer of my stoicism.
