The stones of Castle Volkov hummed beneath my bare feet, a silent symphony that resonated deeper than any mortal sound. Centuries had passed since I last walked these hallowed halls, and yet, the castle breathed with a familiar, albeit muted, life. It was as if the very mortar had absorbed the essence of those who had dwelled within, their triumphs and their sorrows woven into the very fabric of its being. Valerius, ever the stoic observer, stood beside me, his gaze sweeping across the grand hall, a stark contrast to my own internal exploration. His presence was a steady anchor in this sea of the unknown, a comforting weight against the unnerving strangeness of our reawakening.
"The air," I murmured, my voice barely a breath, yet it seemed to fill the cavernous space, "it feels… alive. More than just stone and dust."
Valerius turned to me, his eyes, pools of ancient obsidian, held a flicker of something akin to concern, quickly masked by his usual regal composure. "It is the weight of ages, my Seraphina. The echoes of our lineage. Nothing more."
