The castle, our ancient sentinel, had begun to stir, not with the groaning sighs of aged stone settling, but with a tremor that vibrated through the very marrow of my being. Centuries of stillness, a profound, velvet darkness, had been rent by the insistent thrum of a world reborn. My eyes, accustomed to the perpetual twilight of our crypt, blinked against a light that was both alien and achingly familiar, a sun that had waxed and waned countless times in our absence. Beside me, Seraphina’s breath, a silken whisper against my cheek, deepened, her own awakening a symphony of grace and nascent power. The air, once thick with the scent of dust and forgotten time, now carried the faint, metallic tang of a thousand hurried lives, a cacophony of sounds that assailed us like a physical force.
We emerged from the embrace of our stone beds, the sculpted lids of our sarcophagi groaning in protest, their ancient wood groaning like ancient bones. The world beyond the castle walls was a riot of shapes and colours, a dizzying spectacle that mocked our stillness. Towers of glass pierced a sky that seemed too vast, too blue, and horseless carriages, gleaming like beetles, scurried along ribbons of dark stone. It was a world that had forgotten us, a world that had moved on without a backward glance, and the sheer audacity of its existence was both exhilarating and profoundly disquieting.
“Valerius,” Seraphina’s voice, a melody of twilight and shadow, brushed against my awareness. Her eyes, pools of obsidian reflecting the strange new light, met mine. “It is… vibrant.”
