The air outside the castle walls was a symphony of alien sounds, a cacophony that clawed at the edges of my centuries-long silence. It was a world remade, a tapestry woven with threads of light and noise I could not comprehend. Metal beasts roared past on obsidian rivers, their eyes blazing with an unnatural luminescence. Towering monoliths scraped the bruised twilight sky, their surfaces reflecting a thousand fractured images of a world that had spun on without us. Seraphina, her hand a cool caress against my arm, mirrored my own bewildered gaze. Her eyes, usually pools of molten obsidian, held a flicker of something akin to fear, a sentiment I had not seen there since the day we last embraced the dawn.

“Valerius,” she murmured, her voice a silken thread against the clamor, “this is… overwhelming.”

I squeezed her hand, a silent promise of protection that felt hollow even to my own ears. The world we had known, the one of hushed forests and moon-drenched plains, was a ghost. This was a roaring, vibrant, terrifying reality, and we, relics of a forgotten age, were adrift within its currents. Our initial attempts to navigate this new landscape were clumsy, fraught with a vulnerability that gnawed at my composure. The simple act of acquiring sustenance, a necessity we had long since transcended, became a gauntlet of unnerving interactions. The mortals, with their fleeting lives and blinding lights, regarded us with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. Their hurried movements, their incessant chatter, the very air they breathed – it all felt alien, a stark contrast to the measured existence we had known.
