The air crackled, not with the nascent energy of a storm, but with a far more ancient, far more terrible resonance. It was the sound of reality fraying, of the thin membrane separating our world from the abyss thinning to a whisper. We stood in the heart of the castle, the Great Hall, its vaulted ceiling lost in a gloom that even the moonlight, now a sickly, bruised hue through the stained glass, could not penetrate. Around us, tapestries depicting forgotten battles and stoic ancestors seemed to ripple, their woven threads imbued with a life of their own, a silent testament to the ages we had slept.

Seraphina was a silhouette beside me, her obsidian hair a spill of midnight against the pale stone of her shoulders. Her eyes, usually pools of molten gold, now held the stark, unwavering focus of a hunter. “He is here, Valerius,” she breathed, her voice a low thrum against the encroaching silence. “The Shadow Weaver.”

I felt it too, a cold, viscous presence seeping from the very stones, a parasitic entity feeding on the fear it cultivated. It was not a single being in the way we understood it, not flesh and blood, but a confluence of despair, a malignancy given form. It had woven its tendrils through our lives, through the fabric of this world, for too long. The prophecy had spoken of a coming darkness, a cataclysm. We had assumed it was a force of nature, a cosmic imbalance. We had been naive. The darkness was not coming; it had been invited.
