The air in Mihail’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something acrid and knowing, like dried blood and forgotten promises. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that dared to pierce the heavy velvet curtains, illuminating the chaos of scrolls and tomes piled precariously on every surface. It was here, amidst this self-imposed tomb of knowledge, that Mihail finally unspooled the truth, a tangled skein of history and personal vendetta that left me breathless.

“You see, Valerius,” he began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate with the weight of centuries, “my family has a long memory. Longer, perhaps, than even yours. Seraphina, ever the keen observer, shifted beside me, her presence a cool, steady anchor in the storm of Mihail’s confession. Her hand found mine, her fingers interlacing with mine, a silent testament to our shared resolve. We had come to Mihail seeking answers, a desperate grasp for understanding in a world that had spun so violently off its axis. We had found a confidant, perhaps, but also a ghost from a past we had hoped to leave buried.
