The chill that seeped into my bones was not merely the absence of warmth, but a tremor of recognition, a phantom ache from a past I had long sought to bury. The air in the grand salon, usually a sanctuary of somber elegance, now crackled with a hostile energy, thick and suffocating. Moonlight, once a gentle caress upon the ancient tapestries, now sliced through the tall, arched windows like spectral blades, illuminating dust motes dancing in a silent, malevolent ballet. And there, across the polished expanse of the marble floor, stood a figure carved from the very shadows I had sworn to evade.
Mihail. The name tasted like ash on my tongue. Centuries had passed, yet his presence was as sharp and unforgiving as the day he had last drawn breath, or rather, the day he had last sought to steal mine. His eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, held the same predatory gleam, the same calculating assessment that had made him a legend, a conqueror, a thorn in the side of my lineage for an age. He was leaner now, perhaps, less overtly ostentatious in his attire than I recalled, but the aura of coiled power remained, a venomous serpent slumbering beneath a veneer of academic composure.
“Valerius,” he murmured, his voice a silken rasp, devoid of any genuine warmth. It was the sound of dry leaves skittering across forgotten graves. “It has been… an eternity.”
