The air in Mihail’s study was thick with the scent of aged parchment and something else, something like dried ink and the dust of forgotten ages. It clung to the heavy velvet curtains, to the overflowing bookshelves that threatened to spill their secrets onto the Persian rug, and most certainly, to Mihail himself. He sat across from us, a silhouette against the faint glow of a single, gas-powered lamp, his eyes, sharp and unnervingly bright, flitting between Valerius and me. We had come seeking answers, and Mihail, with his penchant for riddles and his labyrinthine knowledge, was our only hope.

“The prophecy,” he began, his voice a low murmur that seemed to vibrate with the secrets it held, “is not a singular tome, but a tapestry woven from countless threads.” He gestured with a long, slender finger, tracing patterns in the air as if to visualize the intricate weave. “Fragments exist, scattered across forgotten texts, etched into the very bones of ancient places. Your awakening, Lord Valerius, Lady Seraphina, has stirred them.”

Valerius shifted, his posture a study in controlled stillness. His gaze, usually a deep, dark pool of quiet contemplation, held a flicker of impatience. “And these fragments, scholar, what do they say of the darkness that threatens to consume us?”
