Chapter 7
The Wrong One
After the ritual that Father Vito performed, Malachi gets to enjoy months of peace. He's all healed up, and his life is back to normal. Then one night, at exactly 2AM, Alexis returns. Alexis beats Malachi completely to death, in a visceral and brutal fashion. As Alexis beats Malachi to death, she says, "You may break your promises, but I don't."
The days that followed Father Vito’s intervention were a revelation. Malachi awoke each morning without the phantom ache of phantom blows. The hospital visits ceased. His body, once a roadmap of suffering, smoothed itself out, the bruises fading, the bones knitting with an almost miraculous speed. He ventured out again, tentative at first, then with a growing confidence. The club lights beckoned, the scent of cheap perfume and desperation filled the air, but Malachi felt… different. The predatory gleam in his eyes was replaced by a weariness, a profound aversion to the game he once played. He found himself observing the women with a detached pity, remembering the terror that had held him captive. Months bled into a blissful, unbroken peace. He was healed, not just physically, but spiritually. The specter of Alexis had receded, a bad dream that had finally lost its power.
Then, one night, as Malachi slept soundly, the digital clock on his nightstand flipped. 1:59 AM. A breath of cold air, sharp and unnatural, snaked through the room, raising gooseflesh on his arms. He stirred, a vague unease prickling at the edges of his consciousness. He tried to dismiss it, a residual fear, perhaps, a phantom limb of his past trauma. But the air grew colder, the silence heavier, charged with an unseen energy.
The clock struck 2:00 AM.
