The air in Detective Zee’s apartment was thick with the scent of old coffee and the lingering metallic tang of adrenaline. Even days later, the assault felt like a phantom limb, an ache that throbbed with every shift of her weight. The bruise blooming across her ribs was a constant, unwelcome reminder, a physical manifestation of her reckless pursuit. Captain Miller had been furious, his usual by-the-book demeanor cracking to reveal a raw, paternal concern that both irked and comforted her. He’d ordered her on mandatory leave, a sentence that felt more like a prison than a reprieve.

But Zee wasn’t built for stillness. Her mind, a restless engine, churned through the fragmented memories of the Elm Street massacre, each detail a potential key to a lock she couldn’t yet see. The victims, the Millers, were a ghost of normalcy shattered, their lives extinguished in a brutal ballet of violence. Their home, once a sanctuary, now echoed with the silence of their absence. The police had scoured it, meticulously, but the killer had been a phantom, leaving behind only the carnage and a chilling, almost artistic, precision.

It was the precision that gnawed at Zee. The way the objects in the room had been arranged, the almost ritualistic placement of the bodies. It wasn't the frenzied rage of a spontaneous act. This was calculated. And in that calculation, Zee had always believed, lay the flaw. A meticulous mind, she’d learned, was often a predictable mind.
