The silence in the house was a heavy blanket, punctuated only by the rhythmic ticking of a clock and the soft sounds of her own breathing. Detective Zee, or whatever she was now, moved through the unfamiliar rooms with a practiced, almost robotic efficiency. She cooked, she cleaned, she waited. Each task was a small act of survival, a way to keep the gnawing fear at bay. Steph, the other young woman, was a ghost in the periphery, a silent witness to Zee’s slow descent. One afternoon, while the man was out, Zee found herself alone with Steph in the kitchen. The air between them was thick with unspoken dread. Zee finally broke the silence, her voice a low whisper. "Steph," she began, her gaze meeting the other woman's, "how… how does he treat you?" Steph looked away, her eyes clouded with a profound sadness. She stirred the contents of a pot on the stove, her movements slow and deliberate. "You just… wait," Steph finally replied, her voice barely audible. "Wait for your day." The words hung in the air, a chilling prophecy that offered no comfort, only the confirmation of their shared nightmare.
