The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to Zee like a second skin, a stark contrast to the metallic tang of blood that had permeated her senses for weeks. Sunlight, filtered through the blinds of her hospital room, cast weak, striped shadows across the pristine white sheets. Each stripe felt like a quiet accusation, a reminder of the darkness that had so nearly swallowed her whole. She traced the edge of a fresh bandage on her arm, the pressure a dull throb beneath the gauze. It was a physical manifestation of the unseen wounds, the ones that settled deep within the bone, in the marrow of her very being.

The silence in the room was a heavy blanket, punctuated only by the rhythmic beep of a distant monitor and the occasional hushed murmur of a nurse in the hallway. It was a silence born of recovery, of a body slowly knitting itself back together, but for Zee, it was also the silence of contemplation. The case was closed. The monster, once a phantom stalking the city’s underbelly, was now behind bars, his reign of terror definitively over. Captain Miller had been gruff, relieved, his usual by-the-book demeanor softened by a genuine concern that had surprised her. He’d visited daily, his eyes holding a mixture of pride and a lingering worry that mirrored her own.

“You did good, Zee,” he’d said, his voice raspy, on her third day. “Real good. But you gotta remember, this job… it takes a piece of you every time.”
