His face, once a mask of chilling composure, was now a landscape of defeat. The cunning glint in his eyes had dulled, replaced by a vacant stare that seemed to look through her, through the walls, and into the abyss that had consumed so many lives.
Captain Miller stood by the two-way mirror, his shoulders unhunched for the first time in weeks. The collective weight of the city, a burden he’d carried with grim determination, had finally begun to lift. He caught Zee’s eye and offered a small, almost imperceptible nod. It was a silent acknowledgment of her tenacity, her resilience, and the sheer, unadulterated grit that had brought them to this moment.
“You know,” Zee began, her voice raspy, a testament to the days of forced rest and hushed conversations, “I kept expecting you. After the… incident. I kept thinking, any minute now, he’ll finish the job. That’s what predators do, isn’t it? They finish what they start.”
