The sterile scent of the precinct, usually a comforting balm to Detective Zee’s frayed nerves, now felt like a suffocating shroud. The fluorescent lights hummed a discordant tune, each flicker a mocking echo of the darkness she was trying to pierce. Her body still ached, a dull throbbing beneath the bandages that hugged her ribs, a constant, painful reminder of her brush with the abyss. But the physical pain was a dull ache compared to the gnawing urgency that consumed her. Captain Miller had insisted on a week of rest, a week to heal, but rest felt like a betrayal, a surrender to the very force that had tried to silence her.
She’d spent the last three days poring over files, her apartment transformed into a makeshift war room. The family on Elm Street, the Johnsons, their faces frozen in a tableau of domestic tranquility now shattered by unspeakable violence, were a constant presence in her mind. And then there were the others, the echoes of lives extinguished too soon, cases that had gone cold, gathering dust in the archives of forgotten tragedies. Until now.
Zee pulled another thick manila folder from the overflowing stack. “The Miller family,” she murmured, her voice raspy from disuse. The date – ten years ago. A brutal home invasion, a mother and father and two young children, all found dead. The details were chillingly familiar: the meticulousness of the scene, the absence of forced entry, the almost surgical precision of the killings. The official report had concluded it was a robbery gone wrong, but the lack of stolen valuables, the unnerving tidiness of the aftermath, had always pricked at the edges of Zee’s intuition.
