A Calculated Risk
Against medical advice and Captain Miller's protests, Zee discharges herself. She knows she must act quickly before the killer strikes again or disappears forever.
The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to Zee like a second skin, a stark contrast to the metallic tang of blood that had become her unwelcome companion. Every ache, every throb, was a testament to the violent interruption of her pursuit. Lying in the hospital bed, the rhythmic beep of the monitor a constant, almost mocking, pulse, she felt the gnawing impatience of a hunter tethered. They wanted her to rest, to heal, to let the system take its course. But Zee knew the system was too slow, too ponderous for the creature she was hunting. The killer was out there, a phantom weaving through the city’s underbelly, and every moment she spent confined was a moment he gained.
Captain Miller’s face, etched with concern and a practiced weariness, appeared in the doorway. He held a lukewarm cup of coffee, a peace offering that did little to soothe Zee’s restless spirit. “Still here, Zee?” he asked, his voice a low rumble. He knew the answer, of course. He knew her too well.
“Can’t stay, Captain,” Zee replied, her voice raspy. She pushed herself up, wincing as her ribs protested. The bandages felt constricting, a physical manifestation of the limitations she was chafing against.
