The sterile hospital room offered little comfort, the beeping of machines a constant, unwelcome reminder of the violence that had shattered Detective Zee’s world. Even the morphine, a dull roar in her veins, couldn't completely silence the echoes of the attack. Her body ached, a tapestry of bruises and a throbbing pain in her head that felt as deep as the wound to her spirit. Captain Miller had been a whirlwind of concern, his usual gruff demeanor softened by a genuine worry that Zee found both reassuring and frustrating. He’d insisted on her taking time, on letting the precinct handle the hunt. But Zee knew, with a certainty that gnawed at her, that she couldn’t just wait. The killer had left her for dead, but in doing so, they had also left something behind.

The memory of the confrontation played on a loop in her mind, a grainy film reel of terror. The glint of metal, the blinding pain, the suffocating darkness. But beneath the visceral horror, a flicker of something else persisted. A detail, so small, so insignificant, that it had been almost swallowed by the chaos. It was a mark, a deliberate etching on the antique wooden floorboards near where she’d fallen. She’d noticed it in the fleeting moments before consciousness had abandoned her, a strange, almost artistic flourish amidst the carnage. At the time, it had registered as just another oddity in a scene brimming with them. Now, lying in this enforced stillness, it began to coalesce, to take on a significance that sent a shiver down her spine, a shiver unrelated to the chill of the hospital air.

She’d asked the attending nurse, a kind woman named Brenda with weary eyes and gentle hands, about the possibility of reviewing the crime scene photos. Brenda, after a hesitant glance at Zee’s bandaged head, had relented, bringing in a tablet with a secure connection. Zee’s fingers, still a little shaky, scrolled through the gruesome images. The family, frozen in their final moments, the sheer brutality of it all. And then, there it was. The mark. Clearer now, in the dispassionate clarity of the photographs. Not a scratch, not an accidental gouge. It was a symbol, a stylized rendition of a coiled serpent, its head raised as if to strike.
