The sterile scent of antiseptic did little to mask the coppery tang of blood that still clung to Detective Zee’s senses. Each breath was a shallow, painful reminder of the brutal climax that had brought her here, to this quiet, hushed room, a stark contrast to the chaos that had recently consumed her. Her head throbbed in rhythm with the steady beep of the monitor beside her bed, a relentless metronome counting out the seconds of her forced recuperation. Outside, the city, oblivious to her personal maelstrom, continued its ceaseless hum.

Captain Miller had been the first to visit, his face a mask of grim concern, his usual by-the-book demeanor softened by a palpable worry. He’d spoken of protocols, of taking time, of the department’s full support. Zee had nodded, her gaze fixed somewhere beyond his shoulder, her mind already miles away, replaying the terrifying moments in the abandoned warehouse. The glint of metal, the sickening thud, the utter emptiness in the attacker’s eyes.

“You did good, Zee,” Miller had said, his voice low. “You took him down. We have him.”
