Waking to the Pain

Zee awakens in the hospital, bruised and disoriented. The physical pain is immense, but the psychological trauma of the attack is even greater.

The sterile scent of antiseptic was the first thing Detective Zee registered, sharp and unwelcome, cutting through the fog of oblivion. Then came the dull, insistent throb that pulsed through her skull, a relentless drumbeat against the silence. Her eyelids felt heavy, cemented shut, but a desperate urge to see, to gauge her surroundings, finally forced them open. White. Everything was a blinding, sterile white. The ceiling, the walls, the sheets that covered her. A hospital.

Disorientation swirled, a disquieting echo of the chaos that had preceded this unwelcome stillness. Fragments of memory, jagged shards of glass, pricked at her consciousness. The smell of damp earth, the chilling whisper of a voice too close, the sickening crunch of bone, and the blinding, searing pain. She tried to move, to push herself up, but a sharp protest from her ribs sent a fresh wave of agony through her. A soft groan escaped her lips, a sound that felt alien, weak.

“Easy now, Detective.”
