The world had always been a loud place for Liz, a cacophony of sensory input that often left her reeling. But now, with the drugs weaving their way through her veins, it was a symphony gone mad, each note a jarring, discordant shriek. The autism, a constant hum beneath the surface of her life, was now a roaring beast, amplified by the chemical chaos. Lights, once merely bright, now pulsed with a malevolent energy, casting distorted shadows that danced with a life of their own. Sounds, from the distant wail of a siren to the rustle of leaves outside her window, were no longer just noises; they were intrusive, demanding, each one a tiny invasion of her already fractured psyche.

She’d always struggled with the nuances of social interaction, the unspoken rules that governed the polite dance of human connection. Now, those rules were not just invisible; they were actively hostile. A simple glance from a stranger could feel like a physical assault, a whispered conversation a conspiracy aimed directly at her. Her mind, usually a whirlwind of thoughts and observations, was now a storm of conflicting impulses and overwhelming anxieties. When she tried to focus, to grasp onto a single coherent thought, it would scatter like startled birds, leaving her adrift in a sea of confusion.

Her apartment, once a sanctuary, however meager, now felt like a cage. The walls seemed to press in on her, the air thick and suffocating. The clutter, a familiar landscape of her life, now felt like a physical manifestation of her internal disarray. Clothes piled on chairs, empty bottles and wrappers scattered across surfaces, the detritus of her existence a testament to her unraveling. She’d try to tidy, to impose some semblance of order, but the sheer effort of it would drain her, leaving her collapsing back onto the worn sofa, the task impossibly large.
