The world, for Liz, had shrunk to the size of Gary’s inconsistent texts and the hollow echo of his voice on the phone. Each notification was a jolt, a desperate surge of adrenaline that momentarily eclipsed the gnawing ache in her chest, both physical and emotional. He was her anchor, a flimsy, fraying rope in a churning sea, but an anchor nonetheless. Without him, the vast, indifferent ocean of her reality threatened to swallow her whole.
She sat on the edge of her worn mattress, the springs groaning in protest, her fingers tracing the faded floral pattern on the thin blanket. The small room, barely more than a closet, smelled of stale cigarettes and a desperate attempt at air freshener. Outside, the city hummed its indifferent tune, a symphony of lives moving forward, leaving her perpetually behind.
“Hey,” his voice crackled through the phone, a familiar, yet distant sound. It was a sound she’d replayed in her mind a thousand times, dissecting every nuance, searching for a warmth that wasn’t always there.
