The world had muted itself for Liz. Colors bled into a dull gray, sounds softened into a distant hum, and even the sharp edges of her own pain had dulled, worn smooth by the relentless tide of her existence. At thirty, she was a ghost inhabiting her own body, a vessel adrift on an ocean of apathy. The vibrant girl who had once dreamed of art and laughter was buried deep beneath layers of trauma, addiction, and the gnawing emptiness that had become her constant companion. She existed in a perpetual twilight, the sun of hope long set, leaving only the cold, indifferent stars of her reality.

Her days were a monotonous ballet of survival, a series of desperate maneuvers to simply keep breathing. The streets were a familiar, unforgiving landscape, a place where her body was currency and her vulnerability a commodity. Each transaction chipped away at what little remained of her spirit, leaving her feeling more hollow, more erased. The men, with their fleeting desires and their transactional hands, were a constant reminder of her worthlessness, or rather, their perception of it. They saw a body, a service, a temporary distraction, never the fractured soul beneath.

And then there was Gary. Gary, who was both her torment and her salvation, the impossible knot that held her tethered to a life she increasingly wished to escape. He was a phantom limb, a presence she felt even when he was absent, a constant ache in the center of her being. He didn't love her, not in the way she craved, not in the way she poured her entire being into loving him. He was fixated on someone else, a woman who seemed to exist in a realm of perfection Liz could only dream of, a woman who held his gaze and his heart captive. Yet, Gary needed Liz. He needed her unwavering devotion, her silent understanding, her willingness to be whatever he needed her to be in his own chaotic world.
