Chapter 12
The Weight of Trauma
Years of abuse, neglect, and constant struggle culminate in overwhelming trauma. Liz finds herself increasingly numb, desensitized to the world around her, the emotional pain too intense to fully process, leading to a profound sense of detachment.
The weight of it all had become a physical thing, a leaden cloak that Liz dragged through her days. It wasn't a new burden, not entirely. She’d been born under its shadow, cradled by the sterile indifference of the system, and had worn it through the scraped knees of childhood and the sharp edges of adolescence. But now, at thirty, it pressed down with an unbearable, suffocating finality. The years of scrambling, of being used and discarded, of fighting battles no child should ever have to face, had finally worn her down to a nub.
Numbness had crept in like a slow tide, first lapping at the shores of her emotions, then rising higher, until it had swallowed her whole. It was a strange, disquieting peace, this absence of feeling. The sharp pangs of fear, the gnawing ache of loneliness, the searing heat of humiliation – they were all muted, distant echoes from a life that felt increasingly like someone else’s. She moved through her days like a ghost, her eyes vacant, her smile a practiced, hollow gesture. The vibrant, fiercely intelligent girl who had once devoured books and dreamed of a life beyond the grime and desperation was buried deep beneath layers of protective apathy.
The world, once a place of terrifying intensity, had become a muted canvas of grays and muted blues. The vibrant hues of joy, the stark blacks of despair, the fiery reds of anger – they were all gone, replaced by a dull, monotonous hum. It was easier this way, she told herself. Easier than the constant, raw exposure of her deepest wounds. Easier than confronting the gaping chasm where hope used to reside.
