The insistent thrumming in Liz’s chest had started subtly, a faint tremor beneath the surface of her everyday chaos. At first, she’d dismissed it, attributing it to the usual suspects: too much caffeine, not enough sleep, the gnawing anxiety that was as much a part of her as her own skin. She’d stumbled, catching herself on the peeling dresser, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. For a moment, she’d thought she was dying.
