A Fragile Foundation
The lack of stable housing and consistent support continues to plague Liz. She drifts from place to place, her life a tapestry of temporary arrangements and precarious living situations, never truly finding a place to call home.
The chipped paint of the motel room door felt rough beneath Liz's fingertips, a familiar texture in a life devoid of smooth surfaces. Another town, another anonymous room that smelled faintly of stale cigarettes and desperation. It was a scent she’d come to associate with herself, a perfume of transience that clung to her even after she’d scrubbed her skin raw in the shower. The room was small, the bedspread a faded floral pattern that looked like it had seen better decades. A single bare bulb cast a harsh yellow light, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the stagnant air.
She dropped her worn duffel bag by the door, the thud echoing in the quiet space. Inside, a few changes of clothes, a toothbrush, and a tattered paperback were all the possessions she truly owned. Everything else was a ghost, a memory of places and people who had flickered in and out of her life like faulty neon signs. She’d learned not to get attached to things, or to people for that matter. Attachment was a luxury she couldn’t afford, a vulnerability that had been weaponized against her too many times.
Liz walked to the window, pulling back the thin, grimy curtain. The street below was a blur of headlights and hurried figures. Another anonymous landscape, just like the last one, and the one before that. She wondered, not for the first time, how many more of these temporary shelters she would inhabit before… before what? The question hung in the air, heavy and unanswered.
