The rustle of leaves, once a comforting sound, now echoed with the promise of danger. Emerald, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, pressed closer to Rousey, who moved with a predator’s silent grace. Mackenzie, ever watchful, scouted ahead, his lithe form a blur against the dense foliage of the Thornwood. They had been warned, of course, about Ragnar, about his notorious cruelty, his insatiable hunger for power. But nothing had prepared Emerald for the sheer, visceral terror that washed over her as the sounds of pursuit grew louder.

A guttural snarl ripped through the air, followed by the crack of breaking branches. Rousey tensed, her emerald eyes, so similar to Emerald’s own, narrowed. “They’re here,” she breathed, her voice low and steady, a stark contrast to the tremor running through Emerald.

Suddenly, the trees ahead parted, revealing a figure that seemed to embody the very essence of menace. Tall, broad-shouldered, with a mane of dark, coarse fur that framed a face of brutal angles, Ragnar stood like a titan. His eyes, the color of molten gold, fixed on Emerald with an intensity that was both chilling and… possessive. Around him, a pack of Homancats, their claws bared, their fangs bared, fanned out, their predatory gazes sweeping over Emerald and her companions.
