Emerald stumbled, her boots catching on a gnarled root that snaked across the forest floor. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and something vaguely metallic, pressed in on her. Rousey, ever watchful, offered a steadying hand, her emerald eyes, usually so sharp, now softened with a flicker of concern. Mackenzie, a blur of motion at the edge of her vision, paused his scouting, his keen senses apparently picking up on something.
"Careful, little one," Rousey murmured, her voice a low purr that did little to soothe the knot of unease in Emerald's stomach. "These woods are unforgiving."
Emerald nodded, her heart still thrumming from the near fall. It had been days since they’d left the relative safety of the Thornwood, days filled with the constant, gnawing awareness of being hunted. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of adrenaline through her. Mackenzie’s uncanny ability to sense danger had been their saving grace, his quiet warnings often guiding them away from hidden pitfalls and predatory patrols. But even with his foresight, the world of the Homancats felt like a blade perpetually held to her throat.
