Navigating the Thornwood
The trio ventures into a dense, perilous forest. Emerald learns survival skills from Rousey and Mackenzie, while constantly evading Homancat patrols and natural hazards.
The air in the Thornwood hung thick and heavy, a cloying perfume of damp earth, decaying leaves, and the sharp, musky scent of unseen creatures. Emerald Crystal, her senses still reeling from the relative openness of the Whispering Savannah, felt the forest pressing in on her, a suffocating embrace. Towering trees, their bark like ancient, scarred skin, clawed at the sky, their branches interlaced so tightly that only slivers of pale sunlight managed to penetrate the gloom. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of adrenaline through her.
Rousey moved with a silent grace that belied the thick undergrowth. Her emerald eyes, usually sharp and assessing, were now narrowed, scanning the dense foliage with an intensity that bordered on paranoia. She walked a few paces ahead, her lithe form a shadow against the dappled light, Mackenzie a mirror image of her vigilance at Emerald’s side. He, too, was a creature of the wild, his movements fluid and economical, his gaze constantly sweeping their surroundings.
“Stay close, Crystal,” Rousey’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the oppressive quiet. “The Thornwood is not welcoming to outsiders. It hides its dangers well.”
