The name Ragnar is spoken with fear. He is a brutal leader of a hostile clan. Emerald learns he is a formidable threat, driven by a twisted possessiveness.
The name hung in the air, a palpable chill that snaked through the sparse undergrowth and settled deep within Emerald’s bones. Ragnar. Even the sound of it felt sharp, like claws scraping against stone. Rousey had spoken it with a grim finality, her emerald eyes, usually so steady, flickering with an emotion Emerald couldn’t quite decipher. Fear, yes, but something more, something akin to a deep, gnawing dread.
“He is the shadow,” Rousey had whispered, her voice barely audible above the rustling leaves. “The one who hunts not for hunger, but for sport. For power.”
Mackenzie, ever the pragmatist, shifted his weight, his sleek, black fur rippling in the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. “Ragnar leads the Crimson Prowlers. They are many, and they are cruel. They delight in the terror before the kill.” His gaze met Emerald’s, and for a fleeting moment, she saw a flicker of something akin to regret, or perhaps a shared understanding of the darkness that lurked just beyond their fragile sanctuary.
