Chapter 19
Mackenzie's Loyal Heart
Mackenzie reaffirms his loyalty, his mischievous nature replaced by earnest resolve. He pledges his support, whatever Emerald decides, solidifying their bond.
The air in the small, makeshift shelter hummed with a tension thicker than the oppressive humidity of the homancat world. Emerald, her heart still a frantic bird trapped in her chest, watched Mackenzie. His usual playful glint was gone, replaced by a solemn, almost unnerving seriousness. Mackenzie shifted, his lithe form moving with a grace that was both predatory and gentle. He knelt beside her, his tail giving a soft, almost imperceptible flick against the packed earth. “Emerald,” he began, his voice low and steady, devoid of its usual teasing lilt. “We have seen what Ragnar is capable of. We know the danger that stalks this land. Rousey and I… we chose to stand with you, not out of obligation, but out of conviction.”
