The immediate threat had receded, a bloody testament to Mackenzie’s uncanny intuition and Rousey’s chillingly efficient final strike. Ragnar, for all his brutal charisma, lay vanquished, his reign of terror over this particular corner of the Homancat world silenced. But silence, Emerald was learning, was a fragile thing in this land, easily shattered by the rustling of leaves or the beat of a predatory heart.
The small clearing, once a scene of desperate combat, now held a quiet tension. Mackenzie, his lithe form still vibrating with adrenaline, nudged a fallen branch with his paw, his emerald eyes scanning the dense foliage that pressed in on them. Rousey, her muzzle stained but her gaze unnervingly calm, watched Emerald with an intensity that was both comforting and unsettling. The secret she carried, the one that had pulsed beneath the surface of their interactions, felt heavier now, a silent weight in the charged atmosphere.
“He is gone,” Mackenzie stated, his voice a low rumble, devoid of triumph. “The immediate threat has passed.”
